Door Handle or Window Handle? A Selection Guide for Fabricators

A door handle and a window handle may look alike, but they do different jobs. A door handle operates the latch of a lock case, usually together with a profile cylinder, while a window handle turns the espagnolette gear that moves the locking points of the sash. For fabricators, the right choice depends on function, mechanism and where the handle will be used.

1. Function: What Each Handle Does

A door is opened and closed many times a day and has to take the force of a person pushing or pulling it. The door handle therefore works with a latch that keeps the door shut, and often with a key-operated lock.

A window handle has a different task. It switches the sash between closed, turn and tilt positions, or simply locks and unlocks it. It is used less often than a door handle, but it must engage the hardware precisely every time.

2. Mechanism: Door Lock and Cylinder vs Window Gear

On a door, the square spindle of the handle passes through the lock case and retracts the latch when the lever is pressed down. The profile cylinder, fitted through a cylinder hole in the plate or a separate escutcheon, moves the bolt with a key. On a window, the spindle engages the espagnolette gear inside the sash; turning the handle moves the locking elements along the frame and changes the opening mode.

  • Door: lock case, latch, profile cylinder, lever pressed down.
  • Window: espagnolette gear, locking points, handle turned through its positions.

Because the mechanisms differ, door and window handles are not interchangeable, even when their designs look similar.

3. Product Types on the Door Side

  • Barelli cylinder-hole door handles for doors with a cylinder lock.
  • Lever handles on rosette for a clean, compact appearance.
  • Balcony door handles for PVC balcony and terrace doors.
  • WC door handles for bathroom and toilet doors with a privacy function.
  • Pull handles for entrance and commercial doors.

See the full range on the door handle page.

4. Product Types on the Window Side

  • Acoustic window handle series: Tokyo, Belgrad (including Belgrad Flat Slim), Atlas, Ege, Anka, Akdeniz, Asya and Parma.
  • Zero handles for a minimal look.
  • Lockable, ABS, curved, axial and outward-opening handles for specific requirements.

Compare the models on the window handle page. For sliding systems, see the sliding handles page.

5. Selection Criteria

  1. Application: entrance door, interior door, balcony door or window.
  2. Mechanism: lock case and cylinder for doors; gear and spindle length for windows.
  3. Security: cylinder-hole door handles or lockable window handles where access must be controlled.
  4. Profile fit: fixing pattern and, for Rehau profiles, suitable profile adapters.
  5. Design consistency: matching door and window handles give a project a coherent look.

6. Stocking Both from One Supplier

Fabricators and dealers who buy door handles, window handles, sliding handles and hinges from one manufacturer work with fewer suppliers, keep colours and finishes consistent and simplify stock control. Windoform produces more than 3,000 products in its factory of around 17,000 m² in Torbalı, İzmir, and holds TSE certification for window handles, door handles and hinges, alongside ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Sales teams are based in İzmir, İstanbul and Gaziantep, dealers can order through the B2B portal, and the company exports to 80 countries. Frequently Asked Questions

Can a window handle be used on a door?

No. A window handle is designed to turn an espagnolette gear, while a door handle operates the latch in a lock case. The mechanisms differ, so the products should not be swapped.

Which handle do I need for a door with a cylinder lock?

You need a door handle with a hole for the cylinder. The Barelli cylinder-hole models are designed for this application.

Do balcony doors need a separate handle?

PVC balcony and terrace doors usually use balcony door handles. Our sales team can help you select the right model for your profile.
