Lift-and-Slide (Hebeschiebe) Systems Explained: How the Handle Works and How to Choose

A lift-and-slide (Hebeschiebe) system is a sliding door or window in which turning the handle first lifts the sash slightly off its seals so it can glide sideways on rollers. Turning the handle back lowers the sash onto the seals and holds it in place. The handle is therefore not just a grip but the part that operates the mechanism.

How Does a Lift-and-Slide System Work?

The German term Hebeschiebe combines "heben" (to lift) and "schieben" (to slide). Unlike a standard sliding system, the sash rests on the seals when closed. Operation generally follows three steps:

  1. The handle is turned and the mechanism lifts the sash away from the bottom seal.
  2. The sash slides along the track on its rollers.
  3. Turning the handle back lowers the sash, which then stays in that position.

This principle allows large, heavy glass sashes to be moved comfortably in daily use. A correct connection between handle and mechanism is essential for smooth operation.

Where Are Lift-and-Slide Doors Used?

Lift-and-slide systems are typically chosen for wide openings, for example:

  • Large glass doors from living rooms to gardens or terraces
  • Balcony and terrace access in apartments
  • Hotels, restaurants and cafés connecting indoor and outdoor areas
  • Poolside areas and winter gardens

Lift-and-slide solutions exist for both PVC and aluminium profile systems, and the handle must be selected to match the system in use.

Lift-and-Slide Handles, Flush Pulls and Handle Sets

The Windoform sliding handles range includes several product types for lift-and-slide applications:

  • Lift-and-slide handles: the main interior handle that lifts and moves the sash by operating the mechanism.
  • Flush pulls (Havuz series): recessed pulls that sit in the profile surface without projecting. They are used as a grip where sashes pass each other or on the outside face.
  • Handle sets: matched combinations of interior handle and exterior grip, which simplify ordering and installation.

The same range also covers handles for standard sliding systems, such as the Jumbo, Mega, Delhi and Parisyen models.

What to Check When Choosing a Handle

  • Compatibility: the handle's connection dimensions must match the lift-and-slide mechanism and profile system. Check the catalogue for model-specific details.
  • Sash position: grips must not collide when the sashes are open; recessed flush pulls help here.
  • Material and finish: choose the body material and surface finish to suit the frame colour and environment. Available finishes vary by model.
  • Frequency of use: for heavily used openings, a comfortable grip and a secure fixing are priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between lift-and-slide and a standard sliding door?

In a standard sliding door the sash always runs on the track. In a lift-and-slide door the handle lifts the sash to move it and lowers it onto the seals when closed, so the handle actively operates the mechanism.

What is a flush pull used for?

A flush pull is a recessed grip set into the profile. Because it does not project, it is suitable where sashes slide past each other or as an exterior grip.

Which handle fits my existing lift-and-slide door?

That depends on the profile system and the connection dimensions of the mechanism. Check our catalogues or contact our sales team with your system details.

Why order a handle set instead of individual parts?

A set supplies an interior handle and exterior grip that are designed to work together, which reduces the need to match parts during ordering and installation.

You will find all lift-and-slide handles, flush pulls and handle sets in the Windoform catalogues. Registered dealers can order via the b2b.windoform.com portal. For technical questions or quotations, call +90 232 854 70 00 or email info@windoform.com.tr.
